Daily newspapers have started reducing the width and length of their newspapers to cut cost. My guess is they would save easily 10 cents a paper. So a paper with a circulation of say 250,000 daily and much more on Saturdays and Sundays, would save close to $10 million a year. Maybe all that growth in Gannett's profits was from smaller size of its 79 newspapers.
